My trap is catching nothing: 7 common mistakes (and their solutions)

Bzzz, it's Buzette! 🐝

You've installed your selective trap for several days, and no Asian hornets in sight??

Good news: in 9 out of 10 cases, the trap is not to blame. It's one of these 7 small details that makes all the difference. I've got my magnifying glass out; let's investigate together.

Error n°1: The trap is poorly placed

This is by far the most common cause. A trap placed in the wrong spot is like a restaurant hidden at the end of an alley: nobody finds it.

What to do:

  • Install the trap between 1.50 m and 2 m high — neither too high nor too low
  • Choose a spot that gets sun in the morning (founding queens are active as soon as the temperature rises)
  • Sheltered from strong wind, but not confined either
  • Near flowers, beehives, composters, or fruit trees — anywhere the hornet already comes to look for food

If you have a pear or cherry tree, hang your trap there. It's a natural hornet magnet.

Error n°2: The trap was installed too late (or too early)

Timing is 50% of success. The Asian hornet has a very specific calendar, and it won't wait for you.

The strategic window: mid-February to late May.

This is when founding queens emerge from hibernation and seek to establish their nest. A single founding queen captured at this time means an entire nest of 2,000 to 3,000 hornets avoided later in the season. Yes, you read that right.

If it's early May and you're reading these lines: it's not too late, but you need to act now. The last founding queens are still looking for their nest location.

Error n°3: The bait is not right

A bait that smells good to you may not necessarily smell good to a hornet. And a bait that worked in March won't necessarily work in May.

My favorite recipe for spring:

  • 1/3 dark beer
  • 1/3 white wine (wine deters bees, which is essential)
  • 1/3 blackcurrant or grenadine syrup

White wine plays a key role: it repels bees while attracting hornets. This is what makes the bait selective.

To avoid:

  • Pure honey (it attracts too many bees)
  • Sugar water alone (not attractive enough)
  • Industrial chemical baits (often less effective than homemade ones)

Error n°4: The bait is not renewed

Bait lives. After 10 to 15 days, it evaporates, ferments too much, or loses its attractive power. If you put it in on April 15th and it's May 5th... it's time.

The simple rule: check your trap once a week. If the liquid has gone down by half, or if it starts to smell strongly of vinegar, replace it.

Buzette's little tip: take the opportunity to note the refilling date in a notebook. You'll quickly see which mix works best for you.

Error n°5: Only one trap for the whole garden

One trap is good. Several are better. The Asian hornet has a range of a few kilometers around its nest. If your garden is less than 500m², one or two traps may be enough — but if you have a large plot of land, beehives, or an orchard, you'll need several.

Hornet EcoTrap Recommendation:

  • Small garden (< 500 m²): 1 to 2 traps
  • Medium garden (500-2000 m²): 2 to 3 traps
  • Orchard or apiary: 1 trap every 10 m around the area to be protected

Error n°6: The trap was cleaned with product

A classic and invisible mistake. Did you clean your jar with dish soap, bleach, or a scented product? The hornet detects it meters away and flees.

The right method:

  • Rinse with hot water only
  • Allow to air dry
  • Avoid all products, even "natural" ones

The trap should smell like... nothing. Or like old captures, which is paradoxically a plus: hornets release pheromones that attract others.

Error n°7: Quality of captures VS quantity

In spring, the goal is not to capture dozens of hornets. It's to capture the right ones: the founding queens. A single large female captured in April-May is worth more than 50 workers in August.

If you've caught 2 or 3 founding queens between March and May, your trap has worked perfectly. You've probably prevented 2 or 3 nests in your neighborhood.

Conversely, if in September you're catching many workers, it means the nests are already there. Spring trapping remains the most effective strategy, by far.

In summary: Buzette's checklist ✅

Before doubting your trap, check:

  1. ☐ Height: between 1.50 m and 2 m
  2. ☐ Location sunny in the morning, near flowers or trees
  3. ☐ Installed between February and May
  4. ☐ Bait: beer + white wine + fruit syrup
  5. ☐ Renewed every 1 to 2 weeks
  6. ☐ Number of traps adapted to the surface area
  7. ☐ Jar cleaned without product
  8. ☐ You are measuring the correct result (founding queens in spring)

If you tick everything, your trap is in optimal conditions. Patience does the rest — nature doesn't always follow our calendar! 🍃
