  • Why capture Asian hornets?

Capturing Asian hornets helps reduce the pressure this invasive predator exerts on bees, pollinating insects, and human activities. Each hornet captured means one less individual around beehives, gardens, and other living areas. Selective trapping is therefore part of a preventative approach that helps limit the species' spread.

  • We are all affected.

The presence of the Asian hornet doesn't just affect beekeepers . Individuals , farmers, winegrowers , local authorities, and tourism professionals can all be confronted with the nuisances and risks associated with this insect. Taking local action, each at their own level, allows us to contribute to a collective response to this invasive species.

How do I use my Hornet EcoTrap trap?

Setting up the trap is very simple and takes only a few minutes.

Jar and bait

1. Prepare

Prepare your attractant by following one of our Asian hornet bait recipes .

Pour the mixture into a suitable jar (see the guide on suitable jars ) and add a paper towel, cotton wool, or wood shavings to the bottom of the jar. This helps prevent insects from drowning.

Hornet EcoTrap head

2. Screw

Simply screw the Hornet EcoTrap head onto the jar as if it were a lid. Depending on the trap model, attach the rain cover or clip on the feet and rain cap .

Hooray for eco‑catching

3. Capture

The bait, once in place, begins to release its attractive scent gradually, mimicking the sweet odors that Asian hornets love.

When the first hornets discover the trap, they naturally draw their companions through their behavior and pheromones. Gradually, the trap becomes a genuine gathering point for Asian hornets: the more hornets arrive, the more effective the bait becomes, ensuring rapid and massive captures.

Re‑arm the trap

4. Empty it and start again

Once full or the bait is exhausted, it is time to renew the trap by getting rid of the hornets and start preparing it again.

The steps to follow are outlined in our guide dedicated to emptying and resetting the Hornet EcoTrap trap .

  • Spring trapping: capturing the founding queens

In spring, Asian hornet queens emerge from hibernation to build a new nest and start a colony. Capturing them at this crucial time prevents the formation of an entire colony. A single trapped queen can thus prevent the birth of thousands of hornets later in the season.

  • In summer: reducing the pressure on female workers

During the summer, the colonies are fully developed and many worker hornets are out foraging. They can be observed around gardens, orchards, beehives, or living areas. Trapping then allows for a local reduction in the hornet population and limits the environmental nuisance.

  • At the end of the season: capture males and future queens

In late summer and autumn, colonies produce males and new queens to ensure the species' reproduction. These future queens will be the founders of the following year's colonies. Capturing them at this time helps reduce the number of colonies that can appear the following season .

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of attractant should I place inside?

The most common attractant is a mixture:

  • 1/3 white wine
  • 1/3 of grenadine or blackcurrant syrup
  • 1/3 dark beer

Mix the three liquids in the trap reservoir. Replace the bait every 5-7 days or as soon as it shows signs of excessive fermentation.

Avoid synthetic chemical attractants; they are harmful to the environment. Always opt for natural and biodegradable ingredients.

What is the best place to set up my trap?

  1. Sheltered from the wind – Place the trap near a wall, hedge, or fence. Strong winds disperse the attractant and reduce the capture rate.
  2. At mid-height – Suspend it approximately 1.5 m from the ground. Worker hornets search for nests at this height, and hornets are more active at mid-level.
  3. Near a natural food source – Near fruit trees, nectar-rich flowers, or areas where
Bees are already present. This increases the likelihood that hornets will encounter the trap.
  4. Keep away from busy areas – Position the device at least 5 m away from terraces, playgrounds or house entrances to prevent accidental bites.
  5. In a stable location – Secure the trap to a post, a sturdy branch or a metal support so that it does not tip over in the rain or wind.

By combining these criteria (shelter, height, proximity to food and safety), you maximize the effectiveness of the trap while limiting the risks to people and animals nearby.

What is a Twist Off TO82 jar?

The Twist-Off TO82 jar is a glass jar intended for canning or sterilizing.

The term TO82 refers to the diameter of the closure: a screw-on metal cap 82 mm in diameter which snaps into place by a "twist-off" (rotation) mechanism.

They come in all shapes and sizes. We recommend using a cylindrical jar with a minimum capacity of 500ml.

Does the trap work in rain or frost?

Yes, the trap remains operational in the rain: the PETG body is water-resistant and the watertight lid prevents excessive water from entering. However, a heavy downpour
Prolonged exposure can dilute the attractant, so it needs to be refreshed.

In case of frost (temperatures ≤ 0 °C), the liquid inside freezes and the attractant becomes ineffective; the trap no longer captures hornets until the frost melts.

We therefore recommend removing the trap or placing it in a sheltered location when frost is forecast.

How long does a trap remain effective?

A trap remains effective for 5 to 7 days as long as the attractant hasn't deteriorated. After this time, the mixture begins to ferment or dilute, which significantly reduces the capture rate. To maintain optimal performance, simply replace the bait every 5-7 days; the trap itself (PETG body) can be reused for several days as long as it remains clean and intact.

How do I empty and clean the trap after capture?

When the trap is full or the bait is exhausted:

  1. Freezing method – Place the entire trap (jar + head) in the freezer for 30 to 40 minutes . The cold quickly kills the captured hornets.
  2. Immersion method – Submerge the trap in a bucket of cold water until all the hornets are dead.

Cleaning

  • Rinse the jar very lightly, only to remove visible residue.
  • Avoid excessive rinsing; traces of pheromones may remain.
continue to attract hornets, thus prolonging the effectiveness of the
    trap.

Is the PETG used recyclable? How can it be recycled?

Yes , PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) is a recyclable plastic.

  • Recycling : Place used items in the designated plastics bin (often the yellow or blue bin depending on local regulations). Clearly indicate that it is PETG if the recycling system differentiates between them.
  • Recycling centers : Most plastic waste processing centers accept PETG, as it can be regranulated and transformed into new bottles, films or filaments.
  • Specialized collection points : some
DIY stores or 3D printing shops offer collection points for PETG filament.

Practical tip : before recycling, rinse the PETG with clean water to remove any attractant residue. This prevents contamination of the batch of recycled material.

Where are Hornet EcoTrap traps designed and manufactured?

Our traps are designed in France and then 3D printed in local workshops using French-sourced PETG filament. This short supply chain ensures traceability, reduces transport distances, and supports the French economy. (Rain cap design by Quante under CC BY-SA license)
