Throughout the season (from March/April to October/November), your Hornet EcoTrap will capture numerous Asian hornets. Regularly emptying and resetting your trap is essential to maintain its effectiveness and ensure maximum attraction. This guide will teach you how to safely empty, clean, and reuse your trap.
Safety reminders
Always wear thick gloves to avoid being stung, even after the hornets have died.
Use protective eyewear if necessary
Work away from busy areas (terrace, children, animals)
Getting rid of Asian hornets
Kill the hornets
Freezing : Place the entire trap (jar + head) in the freezer for 30–40 minutes until all the hornets are dead
Water immersion : submerge the trap in a bucket of cold water until the hornets die.
Using the freezing method is often cleaner and faster.
What should be done with dead hornets?
Empty the trap at the back of the garden, away from frequented areas (avoid the compost).
If you prefer, place them in a sealed bag before disposing of them in the household waste.
Tip : Keeping a few dead hornets to put back in the reset trap can increase its appeal thanks to pheromones. Leaving some previously captured hornets can help attract new individuals, as pheromones act as an attraction signal.
Cleaning and maintenance
Cleaning the jar
Rinse quickly with clean water to remove visible debris
Avoid rubbing intensely: leaving a slight trace of pheromones can enhance attraction during reactivation
Trap head maintenance
Check that the trap head is not damaged or cracked.
Gently clean the exhaust and intake holes with a soft-bristled brush to remove any residue.
