How-to : Where and how to install a Hornet EcoTrap

Properly installing the Hornet EcoTrap is essential to maximizing its effectiveness while ensuring the safety of people and animals. A good location attracts Asian hornets (Vespa velutina) before they establish themselves in inhabited areas, while a sturdy installation prevents equipment loss and accidents.

Choosing the ideal site

Orientation

Hornets prefer to fly along obstacles (fences, walls, hedges, etc.). Look for a location facing southeast and sheltered from the wind, which could disperse the attractant too much and reduce the capture rate. The bait remains more attractive when kept at a stable temperature (approximately 25°C). Choose a semi-shaded spot: sun in the morning, shade in the afternoon.

Height

Install it between 1.20 m and 1.80 m from the ground, ideally at human height. Asian hornets often fly at this height and are more active. A trap that is too low is less visible and more exposed to pets.

Distance from frequented areas

Avoid potential collisions (with you, your children, or friends) and keep pets away. The trap should be at least 3 to 5 meters away from patios, play areas, or house entrances (windows, doors) to prevent accidental stings.

Proximity to a natural food source

Asian hornets are attracted to flowers, ripe fruit, or organic waste. Position the trap near a fruit tree, vegetable garden, or compost bin. This increases the likelihood that the hornets will encounter the trap.

Key points to remember

  • Optimal height: 1.20 – 1.80 m.
  • Orientation: sheltered from the wind and in the morning sun
  • Safe distance: ≥ 3 m from an entrance and a passageway or living area
  • Near a natural food source
  • Fixing: Wire or string for the hanging version.
